18.07.2018 - Hewlêr (Erbil): Security forces fire on demonstrators in South Kurdistan (northern Iraq)

Security forces opened fire on crowds who had taken to the streets to protest against prolonged power cuts in rural areas, killing a demonstrator named Hasan Rahman. Four other people were injured.

The power supply to rural areas would be largely cut off to enable the implementation of the “24 hours of uninterrupted electricity” project launched by the Kurdistan Regional Government in the city centers… at the expense of rural populations who only have electricity for 2 to 3 hours a day, and sold under this project is 7 to 10 times more expensive than normal.

Demonstrations also took place in villages in the Xebat district of Hewlêr for the same reasons. In Balisan, residents took to the streets last night to protest against the power cuts and blocked the roads.
